  • Projectile Motion
  • Fast-Moving Projectiles—Satellites
  • Circular Satellite Orbits
  •  Elliptical Orbits
  •  Escape Speed

It is my regret to inform you that the report of Group 1 (Sources of Energy) will not be included in Prelim Exam. If you have already studied it, please do not be disheartened for it will be incorporated in the Midterm Exam. My apology for this abrupt change.

Type of Exam: Multiple Choices
Although it is Multiple choices, conceptual and problem-solving questions are merged in it as well.
34 % of all the questions are objective
Ex: This quantity refers to the product of mass of an object and its velocity.
A. force
B. acceleration
C. impulse
D. momentum
33 % will be composed of conceptual questions.
Ex: Can an object possess work?
A. Yes
B. No

And the remaining 33 % will be problem solving questions
Ex: A 0.1-kg stone is dropped from the roof of a building. It strikes the ground after 6 s. How high is the building? Air friction can be neglected. (Note: For simple calculations, use g≅10 m/s2)
A. 20 m
B. 400 m
C. 2 m
D. 10 m
E. none of the above.

Please study well and...
Good luck, guys!

I can't give INC

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA) cast a prohibition on me. They do not allow me to give INC grade to any of my student. This prohibition has been active after I was involved in a forgery case caused by one of my students, she's an Agricultural Engineering student.

In truth, I was giving her a chance to pass Phys 21 subject. But she did not comply. Instead, she forged my signature and gave her own self a passing grade -- May The Almighty enlighten her. Eventually, this was discovered. She was given a disciplinary sanction and I was then forbidden to give INC grade.

Some of my Lectures can now be Downloaded

As you can see I made another tab and named it downloadables. Some of my lectures can now be downloaded from there. :-)

I canceled some of my saturday classes

I decided not to meet Phy 11 - Qq and Nat Sci 1 - Rr yesterday, Sep 14, 2013.
There were two major reasons behind it. First, I was really not feeling well. I felt I could pass out if I didn't get some rest. Two, I was informed that electricity wouldn't come back until 5pm. And in those two subjects we needed electricity for powerpoint presentations.

To Phys 11-Qq, please study the topics about thermodynamics. Even though I haven't discussed it in class, it will be included in the exam this coming wednesday.

To Nat Sci 1 - Rr, I have left a handout on our first topic in Final coverage @ ALO branch 2 (the one near 5th crossing). Please photocopy it so that you can study. We'll have a quiz about it next meeting. :-)

Phys 31 First Chapter Exam Answer Key is Missing

Some of my students requested the answers to Phys 31 - Bb First Chapter Exam to be posted. So, two days ago, I put it on the bulletin board in front of Rm 233. But when I passed by this morning, it's not there anymore! . . Could it be possibly because someone was intensely attracted to my handwriting? (Hehe!)

Well I guess it'd be better if I hand over personally the answer key to my students next time.

"To do" list on Sept 2, 2013

On September 2, 2013, which is supposedly the "rest day," I am going to meet my three classes.

In the morning starting 9AM, in my Nat Sci 1 - Rr (Regular Sched: WS 4-5:30pm) there will be reporting. Topics in those reports will be Sources of Energy and Global Warming.

By 1pm will give the second chapter exam to Phys 31 - Bb (Regular Sched: MH 7-8:30am). Ends @ 4pm Good luck guys!

And lastly @ 4pm, I am going to meet Nat Sci 1 - Hh1.

Sorry guys if this day won't be a "rest day" for us. But just look at the positive side of this. We can have our final exams ahead of the schedule alloted by the university and have our sem break earlier. hehe
See ya!

Phys 31 Students Did Not Show Up

I came to the college early this morning only to find out that about only 4 students appeared! I did not announce for any suspension of my class, but maybe most of them are just too excited to watch today's shows in the campus. (haha!) Well, I guess they enjoy this day as it's also part of their college life.

To Phys 31, please be reminded that our second chapter exam will be on September 2, '13 @ 1:00-4:00.

Classes on Sept 2, '13

Good Day!
The chairman of Physics Dept advised me not to give examinations during the University Intramural Games for the Office of the Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs forbids that. So, I have decided to move the Phys 31's second chapter exam to Sept. 2, 2013 (1pm-4pm).

And on that same day, I will also meet my Nat Sci 1-Hh class. Second group will report on Global Warming. Class will start @ 4pm.

August 9 decleared a holiday

(UPDATE) The whole nation joins Muslims from all over the world in celebrating the end of the holy month of Ramadhan as Malacanang declared August 9, 2013 a regular holiday.

Proclamation No. 629 series of 2013, signed by President Benigno Aquino III Thursday, named Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Ramadhan) “a regular holiday throughout the country.”

“Eid’l Fitr is celebrated by the Muslim World for three days after the end of the month of fasting,” the document, posted on the Official Gazette, said.

August 9 has been declared a holiday in the predominantly Catholic Philippines to “promote cultural understanding and integration,” the Palace said.

Aside from Eid’l Fitr, there are two other holidays in August this year under Proclamation No. 459 released Sept. 1, 2012.

Ninoy Aquino Day, August 21 (Wednesday), is a special (non-working) holiday. August 26, the last Monday of August, is meanwhile National Heroes Day, a regular holiday.

Advance Happy Eidl Fitr, guys!

Answer to the Question About Payment to Phys 11.1 (lab) during summer

Anonymous posted as a comment:
Salam. Sir, bakit ganun? Nung nagbayad na ako, sabi nila may pending payment pa ako yung sa summer tuition na dinagdag sa lab (P155) and then nung pinuntahan ko sa edp and dinala ko yung receipt and sabi nila bayaran ko nalang daw kasi hindi pa raw nakakaremit yung physics dept dun sa binayad namin so ang nangyari, nakabayad ako ulit ng 155 sa UBO for that. I bet lahat kami ganun sir.

Answer:
Yes, even some of your classmates have experienced the same thing.Please see ma'am Heidi and present your receipt (the one she gave you) so that you can refund the amount.

Answer To A Question On Phys 11 Grade

Anonymous posted as comment:
sir? anu pala yung comprehensive exam? walang paki don sa grade ko? pumasa man ako sir don sa comprehensive.. na bakit ganito lang yung grade ko? i need an explanation for this. sir, pinuntahan kita sa office mo na wala ka, panu kita makausap ng personal. sir, i have to fix this.. please..huhuhu

Ans:
First of all, I am so sorry for what had befallen you... as I do really feel sorry to all my students who flanked. But given this responsibility of teaching young students and the responsibility of being a judge over an academic subject, it is really necessary for me to be fair in giving grades. If you only knew how hard it feels, to give a high grade to the students you dislike, and give low grade to the student you like. . . It's really hard. Nevertheless, what you deserve should be given to you.

As I had informed all of you in class that the grade would be based on the following Grading system:
60 % - Major Exams
25 % - Quizzes
10 % - Assignments
5 % - Attendance

The first thing to take note here is that the grade is not only based on Major exams. Although its gravity is big, other domains should not be neglected. Major exams do not guarantee that you would have high or passing grade. Let me give you an example.
_____________________________________________________
For example, you got passing scores in the four major exams. Let's say you got 50 % in each, that is, say you have a score of 60 out of 120 items. In the grading system, that 50 % passing score in  each major exam is worth 7.5 %. ($latex 15 \times 60 \div 120 = 7.5 $)
You didn't have quizzes and assignments. And you had lots of absences (so let's say you gained 3 % in attendance).
So the computation would look like this:
7.5 % - Prelim
7.5 % - Midterm
7.5 % -  Final
7.5 % -  Comprehensive
0 % - Assignment
0 % - Quizzes
3 % - Attendance
Add all this up. The result is 33 %, which is far below 50 %. And that's failed.
This is a simple example showing that even though the major exams were all passed, the grade may still be low (or a failure in this example) due to low scores in quizzes, assignments and attendance.
Try to check again your scores. And follow simple computation I have just described.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PS
If you went to my office to see me, you couldn't see me really because I am not around the campus most of the time these days due to busy schedule that had befallen me. I may even be out of the country next week. So if you want to look at your scores in my record and see the actual computation of your grade, please do not hesitate to visit me any office days after June 9, 2013.
Thank you for posting your question.
And my physics summer classes are over
Before even the enrollment for summer classes, I wished and requested them to give me schedules not earlier than 11 AM. Early morning was supposed to be spent at the oval - pumping oxygen to the muscles and burning the unwanted fats. But what could we do when the demands of others seemed like they couldn't live if their wishes were not granted? At that, we have to give way, of course.
The days were numbered. On one hand, there is the upcoming May election. On the other, there is the deadliest-deadline stuck in my head to accomplish the papers required in leaving the country.  The allotted time was too short, and so the travel demands tremendous speed. Were the comfort to be the only one considered, I should have lessened the pace in class. So, the only remedy I could find was  present my lectures through the power points. The pace was good, I was able to accommodate each scheduled topic at each allotted day. But were the passengers able to grab onto their seats when they boarded a train at such a surprising speed? - sweat of worry spurt from my flesh at that thought for when I looked at the first few activities, it seemed absurd. . . Hence, I was forced to examine each passenger almost everyday. . . Somehow, I was glad the class was gradually gaining momentum later on. The later performances were impressive.
Anyway, I am glad that it's already over now. And so, I and you can finally relax again. I can go out early in the morning again, without my 2.0 kg backpack on my back. . . and burn my fats on racetrack, and savor the taste of my hot morning beverage. :-)
To all my students this summer, it was nice meeting you. It felt good upon observing that you  were paying attention to the lectures, especially when you laughed at my crazy ideas (ex. submerging your father into swimming pool, drinking the water from lake through hose, etc.) of applying the physics into real life. You should understand that those (naughty ideas) are not really meant to be done in real, but were only mentioned to break the ice and to avoid the blood flowing from your nose. (...for then we'll need a lot of tissue)
Good luck to all of you.
PS
To be successful in real life, always remember:
"Plan, Execute and Conquer."
Hi, Nat Sci - Ll2 people!
Here's the slideshow of our pictures taken on the last day of our class. Sorry if there were things that I did which cause you headaches. You should understand that all of them had sincere ambition. And that is to help you shape yourselves into becoming a diamond, glittering, vulnerable and attractive.
Thank you for bearing with me throughout this semester.
Happy holidays!
And good luck as you enter new chapter in your journey in the academe.
:-)
Nat Sci 1 Last Assignment Samples
Good Morning, everyone!
Here's an example of the video you're going to make. To make it really authentic you should be seen in the video. ^_^
To make things easier for you, I have listed below some of the simplest demonstrations. You may choose one among these. Or if you know something else, better than any of these, perform that. It's really up to you.One group should perform only one .
Hope you'll have fun doing this!
A. Dancing Wire
1. Take two identical water glasses and use a measuring cup to fill each with the exact same amount of water.
2. Cut a piece of thin wire that's inch longer than the diameter of one of the glasses.
3. Place the wire across the top center of one glass.
4. Bend the wire so 1/4 inch hangs over each side to keep the wire in place.
5. Rub your finger along the outer rim of the second glass to make sound and watch the wire move. Since both glasses have equal amounts of water, they both have the same natural frequency. Sound is transferred from one glass to the next and thus the vibrations cause the wire to move
B. Seeing Sound
This is a simple experiment that requires very little setup and only three materials.
1. Tie a piece of thread to some tissue paper and hold the tissue paper by the thread in front of a speaker.
2. Turn on the music and observe what happens to the tissue paper.
3. Try different types of music at different volumes and see if there's any change to the paper.
4. The tissue should move when the music is played.
C. Model Eardrum
1. Stretch plastic wrap tightly over a wide mouthed container like a bowl or pot.
2. Place 20 to 30 grains of rice on top of the plastic.
3. Bang a metal cookie sheet or something equally as loud to make noise close to the plastic wrap.
4. Watch as the grains of rice move. The plastic wrap reacts to sound waves in a way similar to the human eardrum.
5. Have your friend make noises to see if they can make the rice move.
D. Sound Waves Blowing Out a Candle
Materials To make a candle snuffer, you need a 2-liter plastic soft drink bottle, plastic wrap, a rubber band that will fit tightly around the largest part of the bottle, scissors, a small candle in a holder and matches or a lighter.
1. Cut off the base of the bottle.
2. Poke the sharp end of a pair of scissors through the plastic to make an opening for your scissors. The edge of the plastic can be sharp, so use caution as you cut.
3. Stretch a piece of plastic wrap tightly over the cut end of the bottle, leaving a small overhang. Secure the plastic wrap around the bottle's circumference with a rubber band.
4. Stand the candle on a table or stable flat surface, and then light the candle.
5. Point the neck end of the bottle at the flame, about two-inches away from the flame.
6. Sharply tap the plastic wrap with your finger as if it is a drum. Listen for the sound you create and observe the candle's flame.
Nat Sci 1 - Ll2 Last Group Assignment
The Last Group Assignment shall be posted tomorrow. ^_^
Nat Sci 1 - Ll2 Powerpoint file on sound wave
To download the powerpoint file that I was using on our last topic, please click either of these:
1. For 2010 format, click  here.
2. For 2003 format, click here
Note:
*If you are using Microsoft Office 2010, choose 2010 format, otherwise choose 2003.
*These are all compressed  (so that I could upload it easily). To view it, you should extract it first e. g. using WinRAR.
*The video clips may not work because they were hyperlinked to the original file in my computer. Nevertheless, the video clips I've shown you in the last 4 slides are extracted from a youtube video uploaded by Pauli1982, shown below.
Nat Sci - Ll2 Last Assignment
Answer the following.
I. Show your solutions.
1. What is the frequency, in hertz, that corresponds to each of the following periods? (a) 0.10 s (b) 5 s.
2. What is the period, in seconds, that corresponds to each of the following frequencies? (a) 10Hz, (b) 0.2 Hz.
3. (a) What is the wavelength of a 340-Hz tone in air? (b) What is the wavelength of a 34,000-Hz ultrasonic wave in air?
4. While playing a game in a golf course, a friend of yours is 408 m away from you. You shout at her saying her name “Jayne!” How long will it take before she hears her name?
II. In your own words, concisely discuss the following.
1. If the Moon blew up, why would we not hear it? (Hint: Sound wave needs medium so that it can travel.)
2. What happens to the wavelength of sound as the frequency increases?
My first try in writing mathematical formula in this blog
Fascinated by a way to write formula in blogspot.com, here's my very first.
The codes used are based on the LATEX and simulated via java extension file installed in this blog. ^_^
 $latex \displaystyle S(n)=\sum_{k=1}^{n}{\frac{1}{T_{k}}=\sum_{k=1}^{n}{\frac{6}{k(k+1)(k+2)}$
Nat Sci 1 - Ll2 Assignment on waves
Hi!
When I printed out the Assignment on Light waves this morning, I didn't examine if it were clear enough. And I have already distributed all the copies to all of you before I could realize that it was NOT really good (blurred, in other words). Sorry for that, guys.
Hence, I am uploading the screen shot of the original copy.
Note:
*Hint for question 3: consider the speed of laser light to be a constant (300,000,000 m/s) and that the distance between the moon and the Earth is 384,403,000 m.
*In question no. 4, c stands for the speed of light, f for frequency, and the symbol next to letter "f" in the equation is the greek letter lambda, notation for wavelength.
*In question no. 5, nm is a shorthand notation for nanometer.
