Answer To A Question On Phys 11 Grade

Anonymous posted as comment:
sir? anu pala yung comprehensive exam? walang paki don sa grade ko? pumasa man ako sir don sa comprehensive.. na bakit ganito lang yung grade ko? i need an explanation for this. sir, pinuntahan kita sa office mo na wala ka, panu kita makausap ng personal. sir, i have to fix this.. please..huhuhu

Ans:
First of all, I am so sorry for what had befallen you... as I do really feel sorry to all my students who flanked. But given this responsibility of teaching young students and the responsibility of being a judge over an academic subject, it is really necessary for me to be fair in giving grades. If you only knew how hard it feels, to give a high grade to the students you dislike, and give low grade to the student you like. . . It's really hard. Nevertheless, what you deserve should be given to you.

As I had informed all of you in class that the grade would be based on the following Grading system:
60 % - Major Exams
25 % - Quizzes
10 % - Assignments
5 % - Attendance

The first thing to take note here is that the grade is not only based on Major exams. Although its gravity is big, other domains should not be neglected. Major exams do not guarantee that you would have high or passing grade. Let me give you an example.
_____________________________________________________
For example, you got passing scores in the four major exams. Let's say you got 50 % in each, that is, say you have a score of 60 out of 120 items. In the grading system, that 50 % passing score in  each major exam is worth 7.5 %. ($latex 15 \times 60 \div 120 = 7.5 $)
You didn't have quizzes and assignments. And you had lots of absences (so let's say you gained 3 % in attendance).
So the computation would look like this:
7.5 % - Prelim
7.5 % - Midterm
7.5 % -  Final
7.5 % -  Comprehensive
0 % - Assignment
0 % - Quizzes
3 % - Attendance
Add all this up. The result is 33 %, which is far below 50 %. And that's failed.
This is a simple example showing that even though the major exams were all passed, the grade may still be low (or a failure in this example) due to low scores in quizzes, assignments and attendance.
Try to check again your scores. And follow simple computation I have just described.

PS
If you went to my office to see me, you couldn't see me really because I am not around the campus most of the time these days due to busy schedule that had befallen me. I may even be out of the country next week. So if you want to look at your scores in my record and see the actual computation of your grade, please do not hesitate to visit me any office days after June 9, 2013.

Thank you for posting your question.

And my physics summer classes are over

Before even the enrollment for summer classes, I wished and requested them to give me schedules not earlier than 11 AM. Early morning was supposed to be spent at the oval - pumping oxygen to the muscles and burning the unwanted fats. But what could we do when the demands of others seemed like they couldn't live if their wishes were not granted? At that, we have to give way, of course.

The days were numbered. On one hand, there is the upcoming May election. On the other, there is the deadliest-deadline stuck in my head to accomplish the papers required in leaving the country.  The allotted time was too short, and so the travel demands tremendous speed. Were the comfort to be the only one considered, I should have lessened the pace in class. So, the only remedy I could find was  present my lectures through the power points. The pace was good, I was able to accommodate each scheduled topic at each allotted day. But were the passengers able to grab onto their seats when they boarded a train at such a surprising speed? - sweat of worry spurt from my flesh at that thought for when I looked at the first few activities, it seemed absurd. . . Hence, I was forced to examine each passenger almost everyday. . . Somehow, I was glad the class was gradually gaining momentum later on. The later performances were impressive.

Anyway, I am glad that it's already over now. And so, I and you can finally relax again. I can go out early in the morning again, without my 2.0 kg backpack on my back. . . and burn my fats on racetrack, and savor the taste of my hot morning beverage. :-)

To all my students this summer, it was nice meeting you. It felt good upon observing that you  were paying attention to the lectures, especially when you laughed at my crazy ideas (ex. submerging your father into swimming pool, drinking the water from lake through hose, etc.) of applying the physics into real life. You should understand that those (naughty ideas) are not really meant to be done in real, but were only mentioned to break the ice and to avoid the blood flowing from your nose. (...for then we'll need a lot of tissue)

Good luck to all of you.
